Bila STAROBA naik kepala, Cikgu buat suka, Budak garu kepala

Tak tahu la to what extent the effects are. Sounds quite serious and profound to me. And I bet it was always a problem since I don't even know when. Tak pernah abes.

The Old Boys think they know best, sebab dulu diorang sekolah kat situ and they had gone through the student's life, so they know all the dos and don'ts, what suits the students best and bla bla bla. The teachers pon think they know best, because they ARE the bread and butter of the school, diorang yang mengajar budak-budak tu from 8 to 2 everyday, they know their students and bla bla bla. And at the same time, budak-budak STAR pon think they know best, because they are what the school is after all, STAR is their home, situlah tempat bermain, situlah tempatnya jatuh dan bangun, bla bla bla. So what do we have here...? It's no longer gajah bertemu gajah, pelanduk mati di tengah-tengah, tapi pertembungan 3 penjuru yang takde a common point of interest. Tak ke pening kepala tu...?

Reading the series of articles written by an old boy, I couldn't help but to wonder whether everthing he wrote is actually representing the real situation. Yelah, the writer himself mesti ada kepentingan peribadi kan? Sama ada kepentingan diri sendiri atau kepentingan STAROBA as an organisation. Kadang-kadang aku rasa what he wrote was a mere exaggeration. He may not have intended to exaggerate it, but did he really know what was going on when he wrote it..?

But again, these people also have their own self-interest that they want to defend and uphold. Be it noble or not, conscious or not, you just couldn't deny this fact. So sekarang memang terletak pada budi bicara masing-masing sama ada nak percaya sapa. For me, it has been a diffcult task because I simply do not know whom should I trust most. It's just that, before you jump into any conclusion, please have your facts ready. Jangan membabi-buta buat tuduhan ni finah tu. You only go into war when you have the gun in hand.

Entahlah. Maybe sebab aku sempat diajar oleh most of them. And aku sangat rapar dengan most of them. So to be told, or to be made believed what the teachers had done and acted is simply outrageous. Hardly belivable. Or am I simply being biased here...?

Yesterday, I was just being informed that many teachers have been transferred. I was shocked honestly. I mean, I was already expecting that, knowing the influence that STAROBA has and what had happened in 2002. But not to this extent. Ramai cikgu pon dah merajuk, both with STAROBA and the students. Sapa yang rugi...? Definitely the students.

Given the privilege to manouvre the students' ship in 2004 as the captain, the experience I have gained from it is vast and deep. Banyak sangat benda yang aku belajar. It has taught me about life, particularly a STARIAN's life. I think, the two most essential ingredients in solving this problem are trust and integrity. The old boys must trust the way the school is dealing with the school administration. They must trust how the teachers are educating their children. And Old Boys need to have integrity when intervening with the school's affairs. Do it with the utmost respect and sincerity.

The teachers have to trust that STAROBA has the best of intention to contribute to the school. It is their alma mater after all. None of us, the Old Boys that is, want to see the school crumbles and falls. We will do our best to defend the school and to uphold the legacy that we have left behind. The teachers must also possess the integrity in doing their job. Bukan nak tuduh sesapa, tapi profesion seorang guru adalah suatu pekerjaan yang teramatlah mulia. After all, tanpa cikgu-cikgu semua, siapalah kami. Nonetheless, don't violate the trust that we have in you. We trust, love and celebrate you, but once you cross the boundary, I'm sorry, you have just lost our respect for you.

Students, STARIANS, you also have a vital part in this whole drama. Please jangan jadi batu api. Jangan marakkan lagi api yang sedang membara ni. Whatever it is, your first channel of voicing your concerns and problems is the school. And, if and only if, the school seems unable to resolve your tantrums, baru la pergi cari channel lain, preferably PIBG. Then barula STAROBA ke ape. I think the main problem is when anak STAROBA yang buat hal kat sekolah. He will immediately go to his dad when something happens. Bapaknya pulak, punyalah sayangkan anak, terus ambil tindakan dengan melaporkan kepada STAROBA without actually confirming the facts. Entahlah. Based on my own personal experience, selalunya anak-anak STAROBA ni yang suka buat hal. Not all the time, but we had a number of cases back then. Don't get me wrong. Aku sendiri merupakan anak Old Boy. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's just that, tolonglah jangan abuse that position. Treat yourself as simply another STARIAN. Back then, no one knew my dad was an Old Boy, not until for quite a sometime.

Respect your teachers and they will have equal respect for you. Haha.. Go and ask anyone from my batch. Our last year in STAR was undoubtedly the best of all. Simply because all the teachers (almost...) sayang and cherished us, as much as we sayang them. Barulah best nak belajar. Ilmu pon berkat.

I doubt this crisis can ever be solved; looking at the ruckus that is happening now and how all parties are dealing with it. But something need to be done. Urgently. After all, who, given the right mind, doesn't want to see the STAR sparkles again...?

adam..
pendapat yg sgt bagus dan rasional.memang sekarang ni benda ni jadi bahan perbincangan semua pihak yang terlibat dalam pengurusan STAR. Batch aku pun concern gak pasal benda2 ni semua.

Macamana ia mula timbul.Dengar dari cikgu2 sendiri, dan pelajar sekarang.Kemudian baru menilai.Nak cakap banyak2 pun, kita dah tak sekolah kat situ.Mungkin ini cara terbaik.

wasalam.

I alwayslove the teachers no matter how cruel they were dduring the days, even Ust Tanusi yang suroh aku tanggal seluar depan orang ramai sebab die ingat seluar aku jeans. Sebab their best interest is always the school and the kids inside.

Dear Gabbana,

I am the webmaster for STAROBA. I read your article and found it quite interesting. It is in the best interest of STAROBA to have diversity in views and opinions. And it is worthwhile for everybody to read your points of view and though I, personally, might not agree in toto with your article, some parts merit serious consideration. And I therefore took the liberty to have it published on STAROBA web site.

I wish to point it out STAROBA was not the party that executed the transfer of three senior teachers from STAR. The dialogue was chaired by Tan Sri Alimuddin himself and the teachers should have known it better than to raise irrelevant points (which unfortunately caused some discomfort to the DG during the dialogue). In fact, we called for the dialogue because of complaints from parents, PIBG and old boys themselves and the purpose was to thrash out the issues so they would not go out of control like they did during the High Council fiasco. It is in the best interest of STAROBA to protect the teachers. But unfortunately, STAROBA AJK itself is mainly some very senior students who only knew teachers like Pak Lau, Kok Kee Chai, Menon etc and is totally out of touch with newer teachers. That's why it matters to have younger generation like you to be in STAROBA committee to avoid this kind of unpleasant situation.

Since I was there during the dialogue, the points raised by the three teachers as posted in my article were not mere exaggeration. It was a reenactment of what transpired that day. But
I could not vouch for the accuracy of other points in my other articles since they were based on letters and emails received from parents, old boys, teachers and some parts from PIBG. But their points alone were not enough to warrant STAROBA to call for the teachers to be transferred. Unlike STAROBA of the old days, we are quite impartial and do not wish to meddle with the administration of the school but, of course, we wish the school could do better in many areas. Our only satisfaction is PRIDE and nothing else.

We had read Asroll's comment on his batch blog and we thought he was serious when he proposed that teachers should be accorded recognition during the OBW. Unfortunately, he himself never turned up during the OBW. It shows the maturity of our former students. Endless and fruitless talks. However, we called for a special dinner at Casuarina during the OBW and some seven teachers were given some forms of recognition. This event will become an annual ritual for OBW beginning this year to show we care for the teachers - whether they taught in STAR in the 60s, 90s and even to the present teachers.

As an AJK member of STAROBA, I invite your batch to come together to build a better school. We need intellectual inputs and contributions from all the batches and I must stress that younger people like should play important roles to ensure this kind of thing does not recur.

Thank you

Malek (Batch 75)

Dear Mr. Malek,

I should have replied to ur comment long time ago. But a lot of things has happened an I was so preoccupied that I didn't have the proper space to reply to ur comment. Anyways...

From what I have gathered, a lot of the younger STARIANS are indeed concerned with what was and is happening in STAR. But they just do not know how they can channel and voice their concerns properly. And of top of that, most of them doubt if they ever voiced their ideas, opinions and concerns, they would be taken seriously by STAROBA. After all, they presume they don't have any influence or status whatsoever to be considered seriously by the older generation.

There is an inevitable generation gap between the older and the younger Old Boys. And I don't think this gap can be easily narrowed anytime sooner.

We, the younger generation, would love to contribute. After all, STAR is our school, our alma mater, the very place where eternal friendship was nurtured and all the unthinkable and memorable experiences had occured.

Hence, we will try our best to cooperate with STAROBA with the capacity and capabilities that we have.

Hope to see you during the Majlis Berbuka Puasa..!
